Is it cheaper to have a tent wedding for 400-500 people?

Can you answer money’s question about Canopies?:

I live in Northern Jersey and I’m trying to plan a wedding for about 400-500 people. I would prefer to do a tent wedding, but have a budget. Is it less expensive than renting a hall? Thanks!
I will need to rent a space for the wedding and reception and it will be catered from outside. I’m hoping to keep everything to under 50K (without alcohol) if possible. Is this wishful thinking?

Canopies Feedback: my wedding was only around 150 people and i found it much cheaper to do a wedding at a venue rather than renting the tents, chairs, tables, dance floor etc…but that does not necessarily mean it won’t be for you that was just my personal experience…going with the vendor all of that was included and i just could hire a cater or do the food myself…good luck and congrats…

Canopies Feedback: I would start by calling around to different halls and getting prices. What kind of food are you going to be serving or having catered? For the tent wedding you will need the tent and 400 -500 chairs, which you will rent. Call around and get the prices on the chairs and the tent. Then decide on which one.

Canopies Feedback: That depends upon where you would put the tent. If you have to rent a park or other piece of property in order to put the tent up, you may not save much money.
Also, some catering halls won’t charge you a rental fee if you purchase the food there.

I am from Bloomfield originally, so I know the area you are talking you about. I would definitely suggest that look into both options and see what the overall costs would be.

Canopies Feedback: When your wedding and/or reception is taking place in a tent you have to rent EVERYTHING.

First of all, you will need a VERY LARGE TENT for that amount of people, and then you will have to rent . .

    Chairs
    Tables
    Tablecloths and napkins
    Silverware
    Dishes
    Glassware
    Air conditioning or heaters
    An electrical supply source
    Lights
    Wooden floor or dance floor
And a “police force” to direct all of that traffic (at least 300 – 400 cars)

Whoever told you that have a “tent wedding” for that amount of people was going to be less expensive has definitely misled you.
